Understanding PDM License Types
SOLIDWORKS PDM offers different license types to match user roles:
- PDM Professional:
- CAD Editor & Web: Full access with CAD add-ins and web client capabilities.
- Contributor & Web: Similar to Editor but without CAD add-ins.
- Viewer: Read-only access to the vault.
- PDM Standard:
- CAD Editor: Supports SOLIDWORKS, DWG/DXF, Word, and Excel files.
- Contributor: Similar to Editor, minus some preview functionalities.
- Viewer: Read-only access.
Choosing the right license ensures users have appropriate access without unnecessary features.
Changing the License Type
There are times when you would want to change your PDM client license from Editor to Contributor, or vice versa. To update a client's license type:
- Open the Administration Tool:
- Navigate to Start > All Programs > SOLIDWORKS PDM > Administration.
- Right-click and select Run as Administrator (required for registry changes).
- Access Client Settings:

- In the Admin tool, go to Help > About SOLIDWORKS PDM Administration.
- In newer versions, click the question mark icon in the top-left corner.
